Cleaning Page

Why do people want to clean their counter tops and floors with chemicals?
This has perplexed me for years.  One day I thought about what I doing, and said to myself, “this can not be good for me and my family”!  Shortly after that I began using white vinegar to clean, which worked well, but made the house smell like pickles and salad dressing.  I tried several “green” products, none of which were ‘green’, and none of which cleaned well.  Finally, when I began using Shaklee supplements I decided to try Shaklee’s Basic H2.

Following the easy directions I used it for my windows – only 2 drops in the 16 oz spray bottle.  I also made up counter cleaner – ¼ tsp in the Shaklee spray bottle.  Finally, we pulled in the big guns, and made up some de-greaser – 11/2 tsp.

Much to my amazement it worked!  It also cost much less than the vinegar and did not smell like pickles.  The spray bottles amazed both my husband and me because they did not break – ever!  Ed was able to clean the grill, use it on the car, and I used it all over the house, including the dreaded toilet bowl.

I wondered if people would think my house was not clean since there was no cleaning “odor”.  However, the fact that my house really was clean, with no chemicals on the surfaces where food is prepared, on the floor where toddlers crawl or in the air that we all breathed made me happy I did not have that smell in the air!

After this success we got brave and ordered the Get Clean Kit.
Clean clothes!  White clothes!
No more running out of the laundry room when the ammonia (for pre-soaking & spotting) fumes drove me out!  Seriously, my lungs were compromised from all the ammonia used to remove blood, grass and dirt from soccer uniforms for years.  No more!  My laundry cleaner is my pre-soaker for spotting and rubbing.  It is made from corn and coconut.  I have a safe substitute for chlorine bleach and use a liquid softener.  Vegetable based, biodegradable softener sheets are in a box on my shelf should I forget to put it in.

We went to Florida this winter remembering to take laundry detergent and 2 bottles of Basic H2 because in other years we had to go buy stuff we really did not like.  I did forget the dish detergent and was reminded anew of how much farther my Shaklee dish detergent goes.  A few drops of Shaklee dish detergent and presto, a sink full of warm soapy cleaning water.  Not so with the provided (name brand) dish detergent in Florida!  Squirt, squirt and more squirt!   We went thru a small bottle quickly and had to buy another to leave behind.

I have since learned some frightening facts about those chemicals that are in counter cleaners, soap scum cleaners, bathroom and toilet bowl cleaners, floor cleaners, window cleaners, dish detergents and laundry detergents.

Here are some of those facts:
Hydrochloric acid .  May be in Odor eliminators and Toilet bow bowl cleaners.
They can cause severe damage to skin, and can be harmful to health if inhaled.  They can be fatal if swallowed.

Butyl Cellosolve.   May be found in All purpose cleaners, Cleaning wipes, Degreasers, Floor polish, Rug shampoos, Toilet bowl cleaners, Tub and tile cleaners, Window cleaners.
Can cause irritation and tissue damage from inhalation – A person spending 15 min, cleaning scale off shower walls could inhale 3x the acute exposure limit.

Lye/Sodium Hydroxide.  Found in Aveeno Baby Cream, Murphy’s oil soap, Crest Extra White and other toothpastes, and in Dishwash cleaners.
Causes Esophogeal irritation, Respiratory tract issues, Liver and kidney damage.

MEA Monoethanolamine.  Found in Dreft, Formula 409 Glass Surface Cleaner, is in many home Hair Color kits, Tide Free Ultra Liquid and Ivory Snow Liquid Laundry Detergent.
Exposure to this is linked to Asthma and Liver damage.
